HIV
The short name for human immunodeficiency virus.
The specific use matters
As of September 28, 2026, the U.S. approved use is reducing excess belly fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy.
The term describes a body-fat change that can occur during HIV treatment.
It does not make all concerns about belly fat the same medical problem.
Visceral fat
Fat deep in the belly, around the organs.
What “belly fat” means in the studies
The main tesamorelin trials measured deep belly fat in people with HIV.
Body weight changed very little in those trials.
The drug label does not list general weight loss as a use.
Ask which kind of change a doctor or other health professional hopes to measure in your case.
The next question
Does the study group match the reason I am seeking care?
Ask whether the evidence fits
Bring a plain description of what concerns you.
Ask how the doctor or other health professional would work out its cause before discussing a treatment.
If the discussion turns to tesamorelin, ask how your goal relates to its named use.
